Life Coaching:
The Client's Perspective (Part Two)

Just like you, most of us dream about the life that we would like to have.

Sometimes we make progress in pursuing our dream. Often times we do not. Usually the dream stays a dream because we don't know how to turn it into reality. If it were easy to change the things that prevent us from moving forward, we'd all do it tomorrow, wouldn't we?

"If only something were different", we say. "Someday, it will change", we think. If only we had more time! So we live our lives, dream our dreams, and ask deep inside: Where is our answer?

Sometimes we don't know quite what we want. We may have a feeling that something is missing. We might even ask why we are here.

How do we find out what is missing? How do we discover our purpose? It all seems so unclear. So we live our lives sensing that something is missing, as the days, months and years go by. We wait for a miracle and ask: Where is our answer?

The answer lies in one place and one place only: YOU

Stop and really connect with that thought.

The answer lies in one place and once place only: YOU

You are the only expert who can determine what is absolutely best for you.

You are the only expert who can create effective ways for you to manifest what is best in your life.

You are the only expert who can discover your purpose and the truth of Who You Are.

Yet life is so busy and demanding that it is easy to get caught up in the urgency and noise of it all. Without support, without community, without others who deeply care, the discovery and implementation of your truth can seem to be more than you can handle.

That's where Life Coaching comes in.

Life Coaching is a powerful form of personal development where you and your coach create an alliance that promotes and sustains your personal growth and competence. Life Coaching helps you to set clear goals and establish ways to achieve them more quickly than you would on your own.

Coaches don't give answers or advice. Coaches help empower you to find your truth and power within. A coach's skill is in knowing the right questions to ask and having the right tools and techniques to empower you to find those answers within yourself and thereby make choices that create an effective, balanced and fulfilling life.

A coach doesn't feed you. A coach helps you to learn how to fish for yourself.

What happens when you hire a coach?

With the help of a skilled coach, several things occur:

How is the coaching relationship structured?

The coaching relationship is usually one on one. It can take place over the phone or in person. Coaching sessions usually occur once a week. Your coach will not direct you or tell you what to do. He or she will help draw from you the unique ways for you to succeed. Your coach's only agenda is YOUR agenda.

How is coaching different from therapy or counseling?

Life Coaching is different from therapy. Therapy is a healing process that frequently focuses on returning an individual to normal functioning by addressing past issues or problems. Coaching helps people who already "handle" life well to find even greater success, balance and fulfillment by actualizing their dreams. Coaching supports a personal change process that utilizes individual responsibility, learning and action for dramatically improving life. Coaching assumes that people can use their resourcefulness and creativity for personal growth and transformation.

How are professional coaches trained and licensed?

Currently, there are no licensing requirements for professional coaches. Professional coaches may or may not have attended professional coach training programs. Professional coaches may have backgrounds in psychology, business consulting, career counseling or may have little experience in fields relating to coaching. There are few standards or requirements. It is therefore important that a client check out a coach with whom she or he wishes to work to be sure that the coach has the necessary skills and experience to be effective.

Bottom Line: Why do I need a coach?

Only you know what you need. But look at it this way: You have people in your life to tune up your car, haul away your trash and fly your body from place to place. Doesn't it make sense to have someone in your life who can help you to tune up your life so it runs smoothly, clear out old habits and patterns that no longer serve you, and help your heart soar to new places of fulfillment and meaning?

There are probably few things more important to you than making your life work. That is the mission of a Life Coach.
